  Life of Riley

Hi. My name is Riley. I’m a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Historians say that King Charles II was seldom seen without two or three of my relatives at his heels.

You might be wondering how an important creature like me wound up with a common Irish name working as a mascot in a French antique shop in Lexington, Kentucky. I like to describe it as a step down in royalty but a step up in class.

There are perks to this job. As I dictate this piece, I am sitting on my “toile de jouy”pad (designed by the nice ladies at L.V. Harkness Design Center) atop a Louis XIII walnut armchair (c. 1880).From this vantage point, I can keep a constant eye on the people coming and going at my shop (Belle Maison Antiques) as well as at Greentree Antiques and Tearoom and L.V. Harkness & Co.

I’m proud to say that, although I’m barely one year old, I already have my own fan club. In fact, some people come in the shop just to see me. I’ve been photographed for “Kentucky Homes and Gardens” magazine and have modeled at the Woodford County Humane Society Freedom Fest charity function at Calumet Farm. You may have seen Debbie Chamblin and me wearing matching jackets designed by Sue Ann Truitt of L.V. Harkness & Co.

Like Las Vegas, what I see and hear at Belle Maison, stays at Belle Maison. Well, maybe not everything. That would not be any fun. For instance, earlier today I was awakened from my morning siesta by the Brittany case clock chiming 12 times at noon. I looked out at the crowd heading for lunch at the Tearoom and, good golly Miss Molly, I noticed two women wearing the same Worth outfit. I wonder what happened once they realized it.

The other day I thought I might have recognized one of our customers across the parking lot. But I was temporarily blinded by the sunlight flashing off her five-carat diamond ring. She recently remarried and is now known affectionately by her friends as “Good Move.”

It’s been a busy morning, with people coming to take a load of furniture from Greentree and Belle Maison to Naples (not the one in Italy, I’m told). We did however ship a piece to Israel recently.

The big news around here is that Sandra Jordan of the famous Jordan Vineyard and Winery in California will demonstrate “The Art of Decanting”at L.V.Harkness & Co.later this month. I can’t wait to learn! I’ve noticed that around 5 p.m. these days, everyone at Greentree Close is busy lapping up the French stuff in Greentree’s cellar in anticipation of the arrival of Jordan wine.

Sorry, but I’ve got to run. I’m meeting Sue Ann for my fitting for my Halloween costume. See you at Belle Maison, where you can find everything for sale (except me) for your “beautiful home.”

Bye for now.

Riley
