A Grand bazaar at L.V. Harkness
|
|
 |
This spring,
please join L.V. Harkness & Co. for a very special event. We are
thrilled to host a Turkish Bazaar on May 11th-13th… a wonderful
celebration of the distinct culture and flavor of this fascinating
country. Not only are we bringing the best of the Grand Bazaar to
Kentucky, but we have a variety of activities and guests planned for
this unique opportunity to experience a taste of Mediterranean life
right here in the Bluegrass. Just a few of the activities that we’ve
assembled include onsite rug restoration and repair demonstrations, a
Turkish cooking demonstration (complete with savory samples!), and
lectures on the arts, culture, and political climate of Turkey. We will
also have our own Turkish Bazaar…there will be beautiful silk scarves,
Persian rugs, traditional Turkish crafts created by Anatolian artists
, leatherwear, ceramics, and diamonds all available for purchase. |
|
We are honored to host several distinguished guests from Turkey. One
of the country’s leading rug experts and advisor to the world’s most
prestigious homes (including the White House), Hakan Evin, will be
visiting with us. Mr. Evin has a wealth of knowledge of the history
and culture of various rugs-Turkish, Kurdish, Persian, Caucasian,
Sumak, and Kilim- and will hold discussions throughout the event. We
are privileged to have Baki Ilkin, the Turkish ambassador to the
United Nations, visiting with us. His wife Nur, who is the author of
the wonderful cookbook “A Taste of Turkish Cuisine” will be
demonstrating and discussing the essentials of Turkish cooking.
Additionally, Yildiz Yagciofthe Anatolian Artisans, an organization
dedicated to preserving the livelihood of artisans creating
traditional artifacts showcasing Turkey’s rich heritage. This
wonderful organization, called AnARt, is a non-profit 501c3 with the
unique mission of providing sustainable economic benefits to
low-income artisans through product development and business training.
This group works hard to ensure that the traditions and skills for
which the Turks are known are not lost in an increasingly mechanized
world, and in addition to provide these artisans with invaluable
skills to support themselves. |

We are also extremely fortunate to have a very distinguished guest,
Dr. Nurhan Atasoy. Dr. Atasoy has an array of expertise in many areas,
especially relating to Turkish textiles. Recently, she curated an
exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. entitled “Style and
Status,” which featured Imperial costumes of Ottoman Turkey. She
will be lecturing on this fascinating topic during the weekend.
She has authored many fascinating books on Turkish arts and
culture. The Turkish event kicks off with a reception on Thursday
night.
|
Over the weekend there will be lectures on oriental rugs,
Turkish culture, cooking, textiles and much more. And of
course throughout the weekend, guests can shop in our Grand
Bazaar. |
